In the printed registers, 1672 - 1695 (Thoresby Society’s Publications), there occur no less than eighty entries of the rare and curious name Langstrope or Langstruppe. It does not appear possible to connect these with the Langstaffes in the same register, but Danyel Langstop (p. cxx), married in 1631, certainly was the father of many Langstaffes, and Henry Langstrop of Raby, to whom a lease was granted 42 Elizabeth, was almost certainly the ancestor (and probably the descendant) of Langstaffes, the name passing through some generations of Langstraffes.
On the other hand attention should be called to the very ancient and very rare name Langstirap (p. cxix) ; also to the following names in the Leeds Parish Register: Austrup (local and personal), Knowstroppe (local) Galthorp or Gawthrop (personal), and Wrenthrop (local).
Two other instances not quoted in the references given are:-
1580, December 2. - WILL of Joane Langstrope of Algarkirke, co. Lincoln, widow.
To be buried at Algarkirke. All to brother-in-law George Kinwood of Fosdike, ex’or.
Proved at Lincoln 11 April 1581. (fol. 50).
