WILLS IN THE EASTERN DEANERIES
OF THE
ARCH-DEACONRY OF RICHMOND
NOW AT SOMERSET HOUSE, LONDON.
**************************************************

Note on the Topography of Romaldkirk, Co. York.

The population of this very extensive parish is chiefly to be found in Teesdale and its two tributaries, Londale and Balderdale.

Along the Tees, starting in the north and following the stream in a south-easterly direction we come in succession to Holwick, Hungry, Unthank, Crossthwaite, Lonton, Mickleton, Romaldkirk, Hundethwaite, Cotherstone and Lartington, the last five being considerable villages. The parish church stands 725 feet above the sea.

Londale lies between Mickle Fell (2591 feet) and Lane Moor on the north and Hunderthwaite Moor (1857 feet) on the south. In it are Close House, Grain O’ th’ Beck, Scar House, Blake House, Rigg House, Corrbush, Hargill House, Stackholme, Wemmergill, Soulgill, Turner Holme, Bink House, Kelton, Wythben Hill, Grassholme, Rigg, Saddlebow, Thringarth, West Park, Greengates, Code House, Bowbank. Lonton and Mickleton are at the meeting of the dales. At Laithkirk, between Bowbank and Lonton, is an ancient chapel which has a register, part of which is preserved.

Balderdale (Bausderdale) is bounded by Hundersthwaite Moor on the north and Cotherstone Moor (1489 feet) on the south. In this dale are to be found Birkhat, Hagworm Hall, New Houses, Pitcher House, Hury, Thurngarth, Loupes, East and West, Briscoe and West Park. Cotherstone is at the north of the Balder,
Hundersthwaite a little to the north-west near where the Wilden Beck flows off the moor.
