Below are excerpts from a letter which was very kindly sent to me by Doreena Roberts, the wife of my 4th cousin.
"According to the grand-daughter of John Martin, John is reputed to have been the black sheep of his family, having supposedly deserted from the army, and is said to have been involved in the illegal forgery of £5 notes. It is thought that  someone in the Carlisle area laundered the money.
John Martin had changed his name to Frederick Roberts by March of 1898, from then on, the
whole family was known as Roberts.
His brother James Martin died at Gaza in 1917, after which time John Martin was known as
Frederick James Roberts. His death certificate states that his name was Frederick James
Roberts.
He told his children that he had changed his name because of his desertion from the army. The
family in general believe it was due to his other unlawful activities. He was never caught, so his
deception worked!
His children knew him as Fred Roberts whereas his siblings knew him as John Roberts.
The 1891 census for Blackburn confirm the family story of John's desertion from the army; and eluding the authorities, who'd traced him to his mother's house in Chorley.  By clambering over the roof tops and tramping over the moors to Blackburn, he turns up in the 1891 Blackburn census living at his aunt's house, and was still living there at the time of his marriage. The rest of his family were still in Chorley. 
 Now for John's reputed dealings in forgery. I am coming to the conclusion that this happened twice
- before and after his marriage. In the late 1880's he was supposedly involved in forging £5 notes.
His brother Thomas, a policeman, was going to 'stop' him, but Annie Maria, their sister, got wind of
Thomas' plan and fled down to the canal where John had his 'workshops' to warn him. John
promptly dumped the plates and notes into the canal and was saved. Can you imagine the family
row which ensued? Did this prompt John to join the Hussar's?
Mystery and intrigue surrounded the early years of John and Elizabeth's marriage - had he
renewed his forging activities? Baptism entries have been found for three of their children at St.
John the Baptist R.C. Church, Ann Street, Rochdale:-

Nov 1895 - Alice d. of John & Elizabeth Ann Martin. God parents Thomas Jackson and Mary
Shackleton. Address 7 Stanley Place, Back Drake Street.
Nothing odd in that entry you may think - but her birth registration reads "7th Nov. 1895 at 7
Stanley Place, Rochdale, Alice d. of Thomas Martin & Elizabeth Ann Martin formerly Jackson" !!
Now why did they feel it necessary to purloin the child's godfather's name for the purposes of
registration? The father's occupation "operative at dye-works" as I remarked to my husband - yes
his own - forging £5 notes!
March 1898 John s. of John & Ann martin baptized - but he was registered as John son of
Elizabeth Ann Roberts (formerly Lawson) and Fred Roberts. What caused John to change his
name completely? Something serious I have no doubt - but whatever it was, he and Elizabeth were
never caught. Who says family history is boring?
 
All subsequent children were registered under the name of Roberts and all earlier children adopted
that surname. So far all the births were registered by Elizabeth Ann - she was giving the false
information. The certificates are signed either E. Ann Martin or E.A. Roberts and yet she had
signed her marriage certificate with an 'X'.
In all this the church records are correct. Did they consider it a sin to lie to the priest, but the civil authorities were fair game?
As far as we know my husband's grandfather Francis Roberts b. 18 May 1900, was the last of their
children to be born in Rochdale before the family moved to Blackburn. They had eleven children in
all.
