record in the College of Arms, London, by William Radcliffe, Rouge Croix, Persuivant of arms,
1809," which was procured by Mr Surtees, for the late Henry Hilton of Barnard Castle, being merely
taken from the imperfect records of the Heralds College, misses out two or three generations and
being unaware of the Brackenbury match, although given by the Durham Visitation of 1575,
Radcliffe has with some show of probability supposed Lancelot Hylton to have been son of John
Hilton of Gainford, who was in truth, his uncle. I am not certain whether Lancelot's grandmother

Hilton of Gainford, who was in truth, his uncle. I am not certain whether Lancelot's grandmother
was daughter of Thomas Blenkinsop, who died about 1546, and who was married about 1532, or
of his father, Thomas Blenkinsop Esq., who died about 1522, by Eleanor Leigh. Radcliffe says the
former, I incline to think the latter; but as from the early marriages then prevalent, his theory is
possible. I will (in order to escape any family reflections for being too severe a herald, and
downright disturber of cherished honours) here briefly give the royal descent, disclosed by
accepting the line adopted in the Heralds College Pedigree.

(Inq.pm 8 Aug 1556) Her brother, CUTHBERT, married about 1528 and her brother HENRY, was
born abt 1529. She seems to have returned with bher son, LANCELOT, to her own country and
friends, and was buried in Gainford in 1587, having had issue.
THOMAS HILTON, whose eldest son was born 1584, and LANCELOT HYLTON, who married
CATHERINE ALWENT, (aged 16) in 1587, and originated the South Durham Hyltons.
This accepted plan requires each head of the last three generations, on average, to marry at the
age of 16 or 17.
Mr Walbran obliged me by a copy of the Hylton pedigree, printed for the second part of his "History
of Gainford." Surtees, Radcliffe and he differ in some minute points and dates.
When I have not been able to refer to the original register, I have given the month or year only, and
not the day in dispute, so as to be right as far as I go.

Knight of the Garter. Protector of England, Earl of March & Ulster, Earl of
Cambridge. The first to adopt the surname of Plantagenet. His laying claim to the
throne of England led to the War of the Roses. The Complete Peerage
v.XIIpII,pp.905-909. Son of Richard, Earl of Cambridge, a noble who had been
executed for treason by Henry V of England in 1415, and of Anne Mortimer, who,
like her husband, was a direct descendant of Edward III. Richard thus had an
excellent claim on the throne of England, which he began to press in 1448 by
assuming the long-disused surname of Plantagenet. In doing so, he made a direct
challenge to the weak Henry VI. In about 1424, he married Cecily Neville, a
descendant of John of Gaunt. Having had the attainder against his father reversed
in 1426, he was himself attainted on 20 Nov 1459. This made him all the more
determined to achieve the throne for the House of York, and he died fighting the
Lancastrians at the Battle of Wakefield on 30 Dec 1460.

Excerpt from her will:
"I give and bequeath to the kings noble grace all such money as is owing to me of
the customs, and two cups of gold. Also I give and bequeath to the queen a cross
crosslet of diamonds, a salter with clasps of silver and gilt enamelled, covered with
green clothe of gold, and a pyx with the flesh of St Christopher. Also I bequeath to
my lady the king's mother a portuos with clasps of gold covered with black cloth of
gold. Also I give to my lord prince a bed of arras of the wheel of fortune and tester
of the same, a counterpoint of arras and a tappet of arras with the Pope. Also I give
to my lord Henry, duke of York three tappets of arras, one of them of the life of St
John Baptist another of Mary Magdalene and the third of the passion of our Lord
and Saint George."
She also bequeathed gifts to Fotheringhay College, the college at Stoke Clare, the
nunnery at Syon and also gifts to her granddaughters, who were the children of
Edward IV.
To her son Humphrey, she gave two alter cloths of blue embroidered damask and
a vestment of crimson satin for the Jesus' Masse.
To her son, William, a traves of white sarcenet, two beds of down and two bolsters
of the same.
To her daughter Anne, the prioress of Sion, she gave a book of Bonaventure and
Hilton and a book of the Revelations of Saint Bridget.
Bequests were also made to her daughter Elizabeth, wife of John de la Pole, 2nd
Duke of Suffolk and their family.
