The details for John and Margret are for reference only!
It is not a yet certified fact that John of Briscoe, Lartington and Charity Lands is the son of Margaret RAINE and John LONGSTAFF of Kelton in Romaldkirk but I believe it so.

                                                              Generation No. 2

3. John2 LANGSTAFF (John1 LANGSTAFF) of Lartington, Romaldkirk, Yorkshire and Charity Lands, Bowes, Yorkshire, England.
He was buried Feb 5 1805 according to the Bowes Parish Records but I found no sign of his Giles Churchyard, Bowes, Yorkshire, England. His age at time of death is not recorded
He married Christian SAYRE on 26 May 1757 in Romaldkirk, Yorkshire, England; daughter of Thomas SAYER and Mary JACKSON.
She was born 11 Jun 1736 in East Newhouses, Romaldkirk - Baptism: 06 Nov 1736 and Yorkshire, England.
She died Bet. 27 Apr - 03 May 1780 at Bowes and was buried 04 May 1780, at St Giles Churchyard, Bowes, Yorkshire, England.

George BLUNDELL LONGSTAFF, in his book, "The Langstaffs of Teesdale and Weardale," gives the opinion that John LONGSTAFF, husband of Christian SAYRE, (SAYER) was descended from a branch of the LANGSTAFFES of Kelton.
The facts are not yet certified but if the author was correct, it appears he is certainly the son  of John LANGSTAFFE and Margaret RAINE of Kelton.
John and his sister Elizabeth were baptised on the same day, making it possible that he is her twin.
Twin girls were born to his son Jonathan LONGSTAFF by his wife, Mary HERD.

My  Longstaff  famly moved from Romaldkirk into the Charity Lands at Bowes in the 1760's .

After the family had farmed the land for 77 years,  a Mr Headlam  decides he would like to exchange some of his own land for Charity Pasture Farm land and gives my 4th great grandfather notice to quit the premises.  - Ref:- Newspaper Cutting:

                                                      DENT v HEADLAM.

This cause, so important to the inhabitants of Bowes and Romaldkirk, was tried at York, at the Spring Assizes in the year 1837, before MR. BARON ALDERSON the real question was, whether the exchange effected by MR. HEADLAM and some of the Charity Trustees, of a farm called Charity Pasture Farm, and common right on Gilmonby Moor, was a valid transaction.  One MR. JONATHAN LONGSTAFF was a tenant of the charity farm and common right, under the trustees of the charity. MR. HEADLAM on being desirous  of having this farm, in exchange for other lands of his, in the parish, proposed an exchange, and suceeded in prevailing upon a majority of the trustees to sanction it. The inhabitants however, with about five of the trustees, THOMAS HARRISON, Esquire of Stubb House, and others, dissented. Certain proceedings then took place under an act passed in the reign of GEO. IV., authorising exchanges of Charity Lands, where beneficial to the charity, under certain restriction, one of which is, that if the trustee is to take the land in exchange, he must first resign his trust and the bishop must appoint another trustee in his stead. Another restriction is that the deed must be enrolled in Chancery, within six months from the execution, by a majority ofthe trustees.  MR. HEADLAM, although a trustee, had, however, not resigned his trust, nor had the deed been enrolled. When MR. HEADLAM obtained the execution of the deed, by a majority of the trustees, he gave MR. LONGSTAFF, the tenant, notice to quit, to which notice, the dissentient trustees requested him to pay no attention. Mr.Longstaff sub-let the farm to the plaintiff, MR. PETER DENT, of Southflatt, near Barnard Castle. MR. DENT, having depastured cattle on Gilmonby Moor, in right of this sub-tenancy, MR. HEADLAM distrained them, whch gave rise to the present action of replevin. The pleadings were very complicated.
MR. HEADLAM in his defence avowed first that he distrained the cattle in his own right, and as bailiff of the other trustees, whom he alleged were tenants in common of the property. 2nd that the locus in quo was his own, and that he distrained in his own right. On these avowries several issues were raised; the main points arising upon them were -- first, whether the exchange was valid or not. Secondly, if it were not, whether MR. HEADLAM could distrain, having a sanction of the majority of the trustees, not withstanding the dissent of the others. Thirdly in either case, Mr. DENT contended that MR. HARRISON and the other dissentient trustees having estates in the land which had never been conveyed from them, the leave and licence of any of these, would justify him having his cattle on the locus in quo.
The judge decided in favour of the plaintiff on all these points, and a verdict was given for him accordingly.

MR. WATSON obtained a rule to shew cause why this verdict should not be set aside, and on the 21st ult., the cause came on to be argued on the Queens Bench. MR. CRESSWELL, MR. KNOWLES and MR. ADDISON for the plaintiff; MR. ALEXANDER and MR. W.H. WATSON for the defendant.
MR.CRESSWELL stated all the transaction, and said it was admitted at the trial, on the part of the defendant, that he distrained in his own right only. The learned council then read the act of first and second GEO. IV., cap. 92, before mentioned.
In the present case, he said, no trustee had been appointed in lieu of MR. HEADLAM, nor had he ever registered his trust and the deed was not enrolled, therefore, the transaction was utterly void. On the fourth and eighth issues, the question was whether, MR. LONGSTAFF had power to sub-let to the plaintiff. That depended upon whether the notice to quit, given by MR. HEADLAM,had determined the tenancy. The notice was given to MR. WALTON, representing himself as agent of MR. HEADLAM and steward of the charity. But,if the exchange was bad and MR. HEADLAM had not the estate, he could not give notice to quit, and as to its operating as a notice from the trustees, it was never proved that WALTON had any authority from them; besides he knew that five had dissented. The other issue was whether plaintiff had the leave of MR. HARRISON.
When MR. HARRISON found Mr. Headlam beginning to be active, in trying to obtain possession, he wrote to plaintiff in these familiar terms, ""Peter, drive MR. HEADLAM'S sheep off the premises; at all events, keep possession."  That is a pretty strong letter, as evidence of leave and licence. Then it goes on,"You are quite safe; break the locks off and put your own on; I will pay for them."
MR. KNOWLES and MR. ADDISON followed on the same side.
MR. ALEXANDER then addressed the court for the defendant, in support of the rule.He said he was not in court when the rule was obtained by Mr. Watson, who would state upon what possible grounds it was granted. He stated that the lands given by MR. HEADLAM in exchange, were worth more by £5 an annum than those taken.
Mr. CRESSWELL- There was no evidence of this kind. I must therefore state on behalf of the trust, that Headlam was to get property worth £1000 more than the other.
MR. ALEXANDER then contended that not withstanding, MR. HEADLAM had not resigned his trust, nor the deed been enrolled, still the majority of the trustees, having sanctioned the exchange, and having directed the rents be paid to Mr. Headlam's agent, that was sufficient. He then read the act of Parliament.
MR. JUSTCE LITTLEDALE--- It must be done by an enrolled deed.
MR. JUSTICE COLERIDGE --- If enrolment be necessary, by the act, how can the transaction be valid without.
MR. ALEXANDER --- Here are parties entitled to the property;they direct that the rents shall be paid to another person (MR. HEADLAM) Is that not shewing an aquiescence in his taking possession.
MR. JUSTICE COLERIDGE --- If I am one of three or four owners, may any of them get rid of my property? Your argument comes to this; that three out of four may dispose of my property.
MR. WATSON was heard after MR. ALEXANDER on the same side; but the court after consulting together, discharged therule with costs.
The effect of this decision is, that the exchange is declared invalid, the provision of the statute of GEO. IV., not having been complied with.
