Henry Langstraf.[?] out in the Rebellion 1569; tenant of land at Raby under exchequer lease granted 23 Oct. 42 Q.Eliz. (1600) for 21 years.
This passed to his son George. Also tenant under a chequer lease granted 9 July 44 Q.Eliz (1602) to himself and his sons George and James for their lives; Ex'or to will of Simon Anderson of Raby, 7 Feb. 1595/6.
Excerpt from the Langstaff pedigrees: In the days of Queen Elizabeth, there were many of the name in Staindrop parish, and doubtless long before, but with the imperfect information available, and especially the fact that the parish register does not begin till 1635, it is not easy to fit the facts together into a pedigree.
Robert Langstaff, the archer who died in the disastrous Scottish Wars in the beginning of the fourteenth century, fighting under Lord de Neville, against Robert Bruce, was doubtless a tenant of Raby Lordship.
John Langstaff of Raby, in 1560, paid 5s. subsidy on his goods, valued at 40s. John Langsthratt held tenements, with gardens and closes at Shotton, under two leases from Henry, Earl of Westmorland, dated 5 Eliz, paying rents of 23s. 4d and 33s.4d respectively.
John Langstaff of Shotton was out in the Rebellyon in the Northe in 1569. John Langstraffe of Rabie was named in the will of William Hodgshon of Lanchester (1598) in consideration of the losses he sustained in the said rebellion.
[Thomas Langstaffe of Raby, in his will dated 27 Nov. 1707, names, "my well beloved friend Thos. Hodshon of Staindrop."] John Langstropp in 1570, held sundry bovats of land at Raby, paying 26s. and 25s. 4d. therefor. Most probably all of these notices refer to one and the same man, and perhaps it is he who, by a Durham Administration bond, dated 7, Apr. 1587, "between John Langstaff of Rabie and Thomas Langstaff of the same place, yeoman," was appointed tutor and governor of Anne, daughter of William Corker of Barnard Castle, deceased. (Anne Corker was buried at Barnard Castle, 2, Sept. 1632.)
Thomas Langstaffe of Raby was out in the Rebellion in 1569. He was described as a yeoman in the above mentioned bond. Administration of the goods, of Thomas Langstaffe of Raby, near Staindrop, blacksmith, was granted at Durham, 5 October 1605, to Gracie, his widow, who was appointed guardian of his son Thomas.
